all about coconut oil

May 23, 2013

All has been quiet for me on the blog front. I took a little hiatus to start figuring things out for our big move to Colorado! 8 days away - but whose counting?

I don’t think I realized what a big deal moving is and how much stuff you have to do. And since almost everything is in my husbands name (bills and such) I pretty much cannot do anything without him on the phone also. Which is fine because he has been awesome about getting stuff done. He has even bought a ton of boxes and started packing while I have been at work.

Even though I have been MIA from my blog lately, I have had a lot of questions via Facebook about coconut oil. I use coconut oil on a daily basis. I stopped using vegetable/canola oil for cooking over a year ago and substituted with coconut oil. (The only time I don’t use coconut oil is when I am cooking with high heat. It’ll smoke up your kitchen in no time.) I also use coconut oil to remove my make-up. You can view my previous blog post about that here. I even use coconut oil when I bake. I make a loaf of gluten free bread about every other week and where it calls for vegetable oil, I replace it equally for melted coconut oil. (By the way, coconut oil is solid at room temperature.)

I have also used coconut oil as a deep conditioner for my hair. This was super simple and I loved how my hair felt afterwards. Here’s what I did:
Shampoo’d my hair very well and lightly towel dried.
Combed out all of the tangles using a wide tooth comb carefully to not break my hair. (My hair is pretty fragile since it’s naturally curly)
Took a scoop of coconut oil and massaged it into my hair. I I started midway down and really concentrated on my ends. My roots didn’t need to much extra conditioning.
I twisted my hair into a messy bun and tied it on top of my head.  Then, I took my blow dryer and used it on the lowest heat setting for about ten minutes. My hair was not completely dry after this.
I hopped back in the shower and rinsed my hair out very well. If you feel a little bit of residue left after the initial rinsing, you can pour some apple cider vinegar on you hair and rinse again to get rid of the buildup.

One of my director’s at work told me that she uses coconut oil daily for a method called Oil Pulling. I heard of this before she told me about it but, I thought it was so far fetched that I never gave much thought to the method. But, after hearing her testimony, I figured I would share it here. (I personally do not do oil pulling only because I feel my allergies are well managed by my daily FCLO/BO and Kombucha). So here’s what you do:
First thing in the morning, before breakfast or anything else, take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and put it in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. This is very important to do on an empty stomach and first thing in the morning.
Swish the oil around in your mouth and pull it through your teeth.
Do not swallow any of the oil, spit it out when done.

The theory behind this is the oil is drawing any toxins out of your body and helping with allergies. Like I said, I personally have not done oil pulling. But I have heard great reviews on this method. My director said that is has helped a ton with her allergies and asthma. She was able to stop her medication for both allergies and asthma because of the oil pulling. (Obviously, consult with your doctor if you plan on going off of any prescribed meds.) If you have tried Oil Pulling, please let me know! I would love to hear more results from this method.

So what’s so great about coconut oil other than the various uses? Well, Doctor Oz loves coconut oil too! (One of the few things Doctor Oz and I agree on) He has this great article on his website that outlines the scientific health benefits of coconut oil. Some heavy hitters for the benefits of coconut oil include: can help reduce cholesterol, help keep weight balanced, and coconut oil has good amounts of vitamin E.

The uses for coconut oil seem endless to me! I have also put a tablespoon into my smoothies to get some healthy fats in. This is something you can get creative and have fun with!
